The adidas “Finale” Champions League ball (2001 → 2026)

The iconic “starball” design from the German brand is now over 20 years old, so we take a retrospective look at its evolution.

In 2021, the ball used in the knockout stages of the Champions League celebrated two decades since adidas and UEFA introduced the iconic “starball”.

It was inspired by the stars that symbolize the most recognized and popular club tournament on the planet.

The distinctive ball went from featuring drawn shapes on models originally released for World Cups and European Championships to a completely exclusive design with a panel system made up of stars and hexagons.

In the following infographic, we take a look at the different versions of the “Finale” edition, which is the ball the brand prepares specifically for the championship-deciding match.

Notes:

* The “starball” made its official debut in the 2000/01 semi-finals. Previously, except for the final, the ball provided by the home club’s technical sponsor was used.

* The partnership between adidas and UEFA has lasted for over two decades; however, Nike was also present in three finals: 1998, 1999, and 2000.

* The unique star panels made their first appearance in the 2009/10 season.

* Between 2019 and 2020, the stars appeared white for the first time.

* In 2020, the ball was designed for the final in Istanbul (Turkey). However, due to the pandemic, the match had to be played in Lisbon (Portugal).

* The 2022 edition was scheduled to be played in St. Petersburg, but due to the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, it was decided to no longer use that ball (released for the Round of 16), move the final to Paris, and launch an exclusive design for the match between Real Madrid and Liverpool.
