All Copa Sudamericana Champions (2002 → 2025)

An overview of the champion of every edition of CONMEBOL’s second-most important club tournament.

Since its creation in 2002, the Copa Sudamericana has seen no fewer than 18 different champions across its twenty-four editions. Argentina’s Boca Juniors (2004 – 2005), Independiente (2010 – 2017), and Lanús (2013 and 2025); Brazil’s Athletico Paranaense (2018 – 2021); and Ecuador’s Independiente del Valle (2019 – 2022) and Liga de Quito (2009 – 2023) are the only clubs to have won the title more than once.

This tournament features two unique historical facts: in 2006, Mexico’s Pachuca became the first and only team from outside CONMEBOL to lift the trophy; and in 2016, the finals were not played due to the tragic plane crash involving Brazil’s Chapecoense while the team was traveling to Medellín for the first-leg match against Atlético Nacional (Colombia).

As a tribute, the Colombian club requested that the confederation name Chapecoense the champions, a gesture that was officially accepted by the governing body.

In 2019, the tournament transitioned to single-match finals at a pre-selected neutral venue. The champion was Independiente del Valle, who defeated Colón de Santa Fe at the General Pablo Rojas Stadium (“La Nueva Olla”) of Club Cerro Porteño in Paraguay, becoming the second Ecuadorian side to win the cup after Liga de Quito.

For the 2020 edition, the final match had to be played in January 2021 due to delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The clash between Argentine teams was played behind closed doors at the Mario Alberto Kempes Stadium in Córdoba, with Defensa y Justicia emerging victorious.

In 2021, an all-Brazilian final saw Athletico Paranaense claim its second trophy after a 1-0 win over Red Bull Bragantino. Later, in October 2022, Independiente del Valle added its second star in the city of Córdoba by defeating São Paulo 2-0.

Liga de Quito joined the ranks of the multi-title winners in 2023, while Lanús did so in 2025, marking the second consecutive Argentine champion following Racing’s breakthrough title in 2024.
