The tournament, remembered for crowning Brazil as four-time champions after a 24-year drought following their victory over Italy on penalties, was a success in terms of television audience and stadium attendance, marking the beginning of a strong development of soccer in the North American country, where it had always been among the less popular sports.
The German brand adidas comfortably dominated the number of teams with almost half of them wearing its famous three stripes, also providing the official ball, which was named Questra since it was an old word meaning “the quest for the stars”.
Other notable brands were the English Umbro, which dressed 4 teams, and the Italian Lotto and Diadora, which designed the kits for three teams each. At that time, the absence of PUMA and Nike was surprising; the latter would make a significant breakthrough in the national team market a few years later by signing lucrative contracts with Brazil and Italy, who were major protagonists of this cup.
